Washington DC Commemorates The Duke

You've probably been handling the State Quarters that are circulated for quite some time now, and lately there were even some few more additions to the 50 State Quarters, one of them is Washington DC's own special quarter.

One might imagine that a Washington DC quarter will be engraved with the city’s memorable architecture, the Capitol, the White House, or even the National Mall. But instead of a monument, the reverse design of the quarter features Mr. Duke Ellington and his piano.

Ellington, the famous jazz musician, was born and raised in Washington DC and many consider him to be one of the most talented composers and musicians of all time. The choice was made in order to show the nation that DC has much more to offer than just politics, and it is not only a government city.

“Justice For All” says the inscription which originally designed to be “Taxation Without Representation” which is a controversial motto about the fact that DC residents pay federal taxes but are not fully represented in congress.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, considered by many historians and citizens as one of truly greatest U.S. Presidents, was the only President elected for four terms.

FDR died in 1945 and Congress decided to honor the late President with the Roosevelt Dime. The new coin was released for circulation on January 30, 1946, on FDR’s 64th birthday.

On one side of the dime is FDR’s portrait and on the other, olive and oak branches with a torch between, symbolizing liberty and peace.

There’s a funny anecdote behind the special coin. The designer and engraver of the dime was John R. Sinnock and his initials (“JS”) where placed on the coin. Shortly after, a wave of rumors spread through Communist fearing America; rumors that the initials of Joseph Stalin were placed on the coin by a Soviet intruder. It’s easy to understand the reason for the initials JRS that were used by the designer on the Franklin half dollars that he designed later on.

I was looking for a special way to commemorate Michael Jackson for some time. The first album I ever bought was Thriller and I even danced my first dance with the music of the King of Pop. The Eisenhower Dollars - Short Lived and Hard to Find now in a Complete Set

Here’s to another lovely 1 dollar coin, although short lived, we’re proud to commemorate the Eisenhower Dollar. The United States Government issued these coins from 1971 to 1978 in memory of Dwight D. Eisenhower who died only a few years before in 1969. The back side of the coin features a lovely tribute to the Apollo 11 moon expedition that happened in the same year.

The Eisenhower Dollar wasn’t very popular, mostly due to its awkwardly large size. The dollar was replaced by the Susan B. Anthony dollar in 1979 which was even less popular.

The Apollo 11 side on the other hand stayed on the dollar coins and continued to circulate until 2000 when it was replaced by the Sacagawea Dollar.

The Franklin Half

The Franklin Half Dollar was minted between 1948 and 1963 and was referred to as the Franklin Half. It had a portrait of Franklin on one side and featured the Liberty Bell on the back.

The U.S. Mint reports that about 510 million Franklins were made until Congress decided to replace the Franklin Halves with the Kennedy Half dollars, after the assassination of J.F.K.

Funny thing with the Franklin Half dollars was the “Bugs Bunny” incident. Coins minted in Philadelphia in 1955 showed Franklin with a split in his lip which looks like teeth are coming out of his lip.

Always use specialty plastic pockets for your coin storage. They are made of materials that do not damage your coin collection that can be found in other plastic cases.

Cleaning coins is not such a good idea. Coins don’t like water (especially copper ones) and they even don’t like you! Yes. Our skin is oily and touching the coins is not the smartest thing to do. Some collectors claim that coins can be cleaned with gentle substance, distilled water and soap, vinegar or even olive oil – and use gloves! Though if you must clean a coin there are professionals and experts in coin cleaning, but remember that once a coin was “cleaned” it may not gain its original value.

"Carry Three for Susan B" - The Susan B. Anthony Dollars 1979 - 1981 and 1999

Susan Brownell Anthony was an American civil rights activist, and leader of the 19th century women’s rights movements. In 1979, the United States minted a Susan B. Anthony dollar coin, which depicted the brave women’s suffrage campaigner.

The coin had a relatively short life span, mostly because of its problematic design. With respect to the Apollo 11, there is an 11-sided rim border on both sides of the coin. Along with the dollar’s color it came to be very similar to the circulated quarter and many people where mistaking the Susan B. dollar with the 25 cents coin.

The Sacagawea Dollar – Daring Beauty

The Sacagawea Dollar is newest and most daring coin design in the history of the United States.

The coin was first introduced by the US Mint in 2000. Engraved on the coin, is the Shoshone young woman named Sacagawea, which accompanied the Lewis and Clark Expedition, exploring the Western United States.

Sacagawea is depicted carrying her son, named Jean Baptiste Charbonneau. The portrait was designed by Glenna Goodcare after a 22 year old Shoshone woman.
